Only in Japan

Even for the most experienced travelers, there is always a sense of culture shock wherever you go. As my mom and I went around Japan, we came up with a list of things we've called "Only in Japan". So here we have it...
  • The toilets are heated and flush automatically.
  • The toilet lid raises when you walk into a stall and closes when you leave.
  • You have to bring your own hand towel to public restrooms as there are no  paper towels.
  • You have to wear provided bathroom slippers in restrooms (not to be worn anywhere else!).
  • It's customary not to tip, and no one expects it.
  • You get a mini ice pack to go when you buy cold food.
  • People walk you to a section of a store instead of telling you where to find what you're looking for.
  • Taxi drivers wear white gloves.
  • Taxi seat covers are made of lace.
  • Taxi doors open and close automatically.
  • Train conductors bow to you when entering and exiting a train car.
  •  Every meal is a work of art.

  •  At a top tempura restaurant, there's not an ounce of grease on the paper  under the tempura by the end of your meal.

  • You're served sweet potato ice cream with cornflakes at the bottom... and    it was good!

  •   You get cold iced coffee from a vending machine.

  • You find no bad graphic design... Every packaging box is beautiful.

  •    You can buy beer in vending machines on the street.

  • You see a sushi chef searing fish with a piece of coal straight from the fire pit.

  • You get fish scale tempura... yes, you read that right!
  • You get served udon on the airplane.
