Intricate Ceramics
Today was one of my busiest days yet! In the early afternoon, I needed a coffee fix so I went to this super American place where a lot of college students hang out. I didn't stay long because I had class, but I ended up meeting other students so hopefully I can get together with them sometime!
I had ceramics today, which was super crazy because I was working on four projects throughout class. First, my rhino Msanii. He is officially put back together, hollowed out, and even has a groove that will be used to hang him! Now that he is stiffening up a bit, I can lay him down.
I realized that one of his ears is much lower than the other, though I think that has to do with how he was hollowed out and joined back together... At this point, I don't think I can fix it because the clay is too hard so he'll have to live with being a little lopsided. But, I think it gives him more personality!
Then, we had our first wheel throwing session. The ceramics studio only has four wheels so we had to take turns (there's nine of us in the class). I didn't particularly care for it, but I would say my bowl turned out okay for being a first timer! We will have to throw some more next class too. I burned my hand on a pot recently, so throwing on the wheel didn't help the healing process much. Hopefully it will be better by next class.
Then, I worked on my vase, which I haven't yet taken a picture of because it's not far enough along. From there, I worked on my lid to my hexagonal container. The lid is going to take a lot of time because I'm going to do a triangle design within the sun, lines within the sun rays, and curves within the ocean. I have to do all of this really slowly and go over each line at least five times with the pen tool to get all the chunks out of the grooves.
I went to the studio after my museology class (which was interesting because we talked about world fairs and India) but only stayed for an hour. This was my lid by the time I left. I'll go in this weekend to (hopefully) finish it. Once that's done, I will be all caught up with the class!
When I came home, I had the sudden urge to carve more soap so I made this elephant.
I decided that I like the elephant more with a design on it, so I'm going to do that with the other one I made as well. I feel like such an art major, and it is amazing. It is my passion and I am so happy to be getting a small taste of art school here in Italy.
Ciao for now!
